Water Safety May 2026

Enjoy the Water. Respect the Risk.
National Water Safety Awareness Next Week – May 18th to 24th!
• Water Safety Ireland will be shining a spotlight on the importance of staying safe on and near the water this week. This dedicated week is all about raising awareness, sharing safety tips, and encouraging responsible enjoyment of our beautiful waterways.
• Whether you're enjoying activities on or near the water — take a moment to learn how to stay safe.
• To help the public stay safe around water this summer, Water Safety Ireland has launched a dedicated Campaign Hub at www.watersafety.ie/awarenessweek

A total of 1,124 people drowned in Ireland between 2014 and 2023, a period when 1,515 died on roads. Drowning accounted for 43% of this combined total of 2,639 road and water deaths. People are requested to take some basic steps to stay safe on or near water as people visit waterways nationwide or participate in coastal and inland aquatic activities during the summer months.

You, your family, or friends may be out enjoying the outdoors in the beautiful Lake County over the coming summer weeks and months. That is great…….but think about your safety when in/around the water.

Key Water safety advice for a safe summer:

 Take a training course for your planned activity – see providers at www.safetyzone.ie
