Water Safety during the August Bank Holiday Weekend

The August Bank Holiday Weekend is approaching and some of you may be considering spending time in, on or around water across our beautiful Lake County or at another location around the country.

Please think about your water safety.

Water Safety Ireland data on drownings indicates that:

  • an average of ten people drown monthly in Ireland.
  • The majority of those are people aged 40 to 69 years old.
  • Males accounted for 70% of the drownings.
  • A total of 588 people drowned in the period 2017 to 2021. 388 (58%) were accidental. Of these accidental drownings, 25% drowned while swimming and 61% were engaged in land-based activities such as walking, hiking, and angling from shore prior to drowning.
