Westmeath County Council continues to deliver vital public services in the challenging circumstances arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. We are advised by relevant Government and other public agencies on an ongoing basis in doing so.
On the 26th March 2020, in the lead up to vegetation fire season (i.e. fires on grasslands, forests and peatlands), it was declared that the controlled burning by the agricultural community would no longer be permitted.
Now, following requests from the Department of Agriculture and Food, and consultations at national level, it has been decided to rescind this ban countrywide, and return to the operation of normal procedures at Local Authority level, to permit the control of burning by the agricultural community under specified conditions.
Persons wishing to carry out controlled burning of vegetation in Westmeath, should now contact the Environment section of Westmeath County Council to seek permission in the normal way.
