Mullingar Library was buzzing with excitement on Saturday 30th September as families gathered for a special medal ceremony for all those who completed the Summer Stars Reading Programme.
The Summer Stars Reading Programme.was a national reading initiative so if you visited any public library this summer, you will no doubt have came across Binky and Zoink, the mascots of Summer Stars. The aim of the programme was to foster a love of recreational reading and to maintain continuous reading across the summer months. In addition, Summer Stars encouraged family reading; whether through picking books in the library, or reading them at home, the Summer Stars saw families with children of all ages coming through the doors to participate.
And what a fantastic response we had in Mullingar Library. Nearly 200 children were eligible for medals having completed at least 1 Summer Reading Stars Card. We handed out pencils, wristbands, bookmarks and fridge magnets as reading rewards throughout June, July and August. We also had weekly draws, whose winners included: Silver Chukwumeka, Lia Roe, Ciaran Fallon, Eoin Flynn, Alexandra Cullen, Maeve Staunton, Hei Wun Seto and Ivy Timlin. The result was a phenomenal 18,445 childrens books borrowed from Mullingar Library this summer.
On Saturday 30th, the library was filled with smiles and laughter as young readers received their medal from Snow White and then had to escape the Library Pirate’s clutches with their well deserved treasure.
