Templecross Church is a late medieval structure that had a priest's residence on the first floor and a crypt beneath. It houses a 17th century armorial plaque to the chronicler Henry Piers. The ‘Corp Naomh’ Bell Shrine, now in the National Museum of Ireland, came from this site.
The tour will continue to nearby Kilbixy to see the remains of a medieval 'Leper Hospital' and the 19th Century pyramidal mausoleum to the Malone family.
Richard McLouglin, who led the conservation of these two unique monuments, will guide the group in Kilbixy. There will be an opportunity to see inside the mausoleum and to view the early medieval grave slab on display in St Biseach’s Church.
This free event, is an action of the Westmeath Heritage Plan funded by The Heritage Council with support from Westmeath County Council
