Westmeath County Council is currently undertaking flood attenuation works on Retreat Road, Athlone. These works are being delivered in response to concerns and representations raised by elected members of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District.
The project primarily involves the construction of underground storage infrastructure to increase stormwater capacity and reduce the risk of flooding during prolonged periods of rainfall. The scheme also incorporates nature-based drainage features to further enhance flood management and environmental outcomes.
The works have been designed and approved by the Executive and Engineering staff of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District, with support from the Council's Active Travel Team. The objective of the scheme is to alleviate the flooding issues that have been experienced at this location and to reduce the associated risks to road users and nearby properties.
The Council gratefully acknowledges the financial support provided by the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO), which has contributed €60,000 towards the delivery of this project.
