Make sure to keep Friday 21st September free and join in the annual Culture Night celebrations all over Westmeath County.
What started as a small city based event, intended to give people access to Public Cultural institutions and buildings spaces for free, has become a staple in the calendar of many counties beyond city borders. Westmeath has a dynamic and colourful array of events to suit all audience members.
There are multiple opportunities to explore the fantastic cultural venues available with events taking place around the county including Athlone, Mullingar, Moate, Ballynacarrigy, Castlepollard, Collinstown, Fore, Kilbeggan and Rochfortbridge. All the events are free so drop in and join in the celebrations!
Art lovers have the chance to see a wide range of exhibitions, so why not visit: the Abbey Road Studios & Luan Gallery. Music lovers will also have the chance to hear the Athlone Youth Orchestra performing in the Civic Buildings, Athlone 6-7pm. The Poetic Note are performing in Athlone Library and Athlone pipe band and army band are performing in Athlone Castle (free admission). Or why not put on your walking shoes and join in a walking tour of John Broderick’s Athlone with Annemarie Ni Churreain and Gearoid O’Brien commencing from Prince of Wales.
Drop into Moate Library and join in the Monster Doddle or witness ’A Raree Show in Tuar Ard Arts Centre and be part of a community art project facilitated by Dominique Foley. Enjoy free admission to Dun na Si Heritage Park.
Kicking off early in Mullingar Arts Centre – Mullingar Student Players will be performing ‘Little Women’ at 10:30am and later in the evening at 5pm a screening of the Breadwinner will take place (free admission to both)
Take in some our cultural heritage by visiting Belvedere House and Gardens . Belverdere is offering a free guided tour of Park & Follies from 4pm-5:30pm & a free guided tour of Belvedere House from 7pm – 8:30pm. Check out the Market Square where there will be performances from Elevate Dance, Mullingar Town Band and Energy Plus Dance. Ruth Illingworth is presenting a talk on the Artwork in the Cathedral, and also doing a walking tour of Public Artworks in Mullingar. In the evening Ruth does a tour of Greville Arms Hotel Museum. You can get creative at Crane Bird Art Studio with 2 free workshops available or join in Memoir Writing Workshop in Mullingar library.
Don’t forget Aras an Mhuillinn who are presenting a night of music, song, dance and storytelling.
Ballynacargy CCE who will celebrate Culture Night with an evening of Music, Song, Dance and Stories as well as 1916 Centenary Celebrations in Teach Ceol at 8pm.
Start off the day by dropping into the Library and checking out the entries to Castlepollard Writers Group competition and pop over to Hotel Castlepollard for open mic of poetry and short story telling.
Jailbreak - This is a wonderful puzzle for all the family to solve. Can you escape the medieval Jail in Fore and reach freedom before evil Henry VIII and his minions catch up with you. Engage characters all along the 3km trail and solve clues to progress. Can you reach the finish line?
