During the 2025 STEPS Engineers Week, Westmeath Libraries was delighted to work with engineers from Westmeath County Council to highlight the vital role engineers play in shaping communities, delivering essential services, and ensuring public safety. From roads and traffic management to water services and fire safety, engineers are at the heart of infrastructure development and maintenance, improving the quality of life for all.

Representatives from Fire Services, Municipal Districts, Transportation and Regeneration & Capital Projects joined children in Mullingar and Athlone Libraries to talk about engineering in action in everyday life. Children from St Mary’s NS, Athlone, St Colman’s NS, Mullingar and St Tola’s NS, Delvin had the opportunity to meet engineers, ask questions and check out a water pump, a wind turbine, a plasma ball and the STEPS website activities.  Kelley Keogh, STEM Engagement Officer for Westmeath County Council, was on hand to introduce students to the VEX robotics kit which proved to be good fun and a talking point for all.

STEPS Engineers Week aims to inspire students to look to the future and explore engineering as a career pathway. Engineering impacts all aspects of our lives and opportunities to engineer the Ireland of the future can be found in civil, mechanic, electrical and software engineering careers. Your local council uses all these skills to make life better for the people living and working in Westmeath. Engineers are encouraged to be solution orientated, so as well as having 46 engineering roles, Westmeath County Council offers other career opportunities to those with an engineering background who embrace the ethos “Dream big, Design for the Future”.
