Transportation Annual Works Programme

The Transportation Annual Works Programme provides funding and investment for the continued maintenance and improvement in our public road network in Co Westmeath.

Pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, & Article 12 of the Roads Regulations 1994, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council having given the required notice of intention has now decided to temporarily CLOSE to public traffic the following road for the period and reason specified below.

Diversion: L-1007 & L-5008

Detour signage will be in place.

Installation of Livestock Underpass

A map indicating the location of the road closure and the diversions to be put in place may be viewed above.

This road shall be closed from 7am on the 17th November 2025 until 6pm on the 28th November 2025.
Sections of Galway to Dublin Greenway Route

Westmeath County Council wishes to inform you of our intention to carry out essential renewal works on the existing greenway. These works are necessary to maintain and improve the quality and safety of the greenway for all users.

The works are scheduled to begin on 6th October 2025 and are expected to last approximately 2 weeks on the following two sections.

  1. The proposed works are on the stretch between Moate station and 2.5km east of Moate station, Ballybeg bog, between marker post 17km and 18km along the old rail trail.
  2. Tully access point and carpark halfway between Moate station and Athlone Garrycastle.

N55 Glasson 

Pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, & Article 12 of the Roads Regulations 1994, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council having given the required notice of intention has now decided to temporarily close to public traffic the following road for the period and reason specified below: -

Road Subject to Closure

Updated schedule as of Nov 6th 2025:

Stages 1 : N55 Glasson - from the R390 at Ballykeeran to Local Road L-1437 Pearsonsbrook Road at Glasson.

Stage 2: N55 Glasson - from Local Road L-5467 Killinure Road at Glasson to Local Road L-5465 Tubberclair.

Period of Closure

Intermittently from 20th October 2025 until 5th December 2025. 

Stage 1:The works will be carried out between the hours of 08:00am and 5:00pm  during the Temporary Road Closure period and at all other times the road will remain open.

Stage 2: The works will be carried out between the hours of 08:00am and 5:00pm during the Temporary Road Closure period and at all other times the road will remain open.

Reason for Closure

To facilitate Pavement Management Improvement Roadworks at Glasson on the N55.

Alternative Routes

Stage 1

Traffic travelling north along the N55 towards Glasson shall divert via the R390 to Corr Cross and then turn left onto the local road L-1437 Brittas Road re-joining the N55 at Glasson.

Traffic travelling south along the N55 towards Athlone shall divert left at Glasson onto the local road L-1437 Pearsonsbrook road to its junction with the R390 at Corr Cross. Traffic shall continue along the R390 and re-join the N55.

Stage 2 

Traffic travelling north along the N55 towards Glasson shall divert via the R390 to Loughnavalley and then turn left onto the regional road R389 to its junction with the regional road R392 at Skeagh Beg Cross then turn left onto regional road R392 to its junction with the N55 at Ballymahon. Traffic shall continue along the N55 towards Tang, Tubberclair and Glasson.

Traffic intending to travel south on the N55 from Ballymahon shall divert via the R392 to Skeagh Beg Cross and then turn right onto regional road R389 to its junction with the R390 at Loughnavalley then turn right onto regional road R390. Traffic shall continue along the R390 and re-join the N55.

Diversion Routes

Local access arrangements will be in place. All diversions will be signposted.

N4 Slip Roads at Junction 16 and N52 at Junction 16

Pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, & Article 12 of the Roads Regulations 1994, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council having given the required notice of intention has now decided to temporarily CLOSE to public traffic the following roads for the period and reason specified below.

To facilitate the reconstruction of Pavement on all slip roads, roundabout and overbridge.

These roads shall be closed, in phases as described above, from 7am on 22nd September 2025 until 6pm on the 8th November 2025.
The Quay (South), Athlone (L-8015-0)

Westmeath County Council has now decided to extend the closing to public traffic, the road’s described hereunder between the dates shown to facilitate works for the Athlone Main Drainage Project.

Alternative Routes Available:

  • Main Street (L-4019-0) to Saint Peter's Port (L-8014-0)

Notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council has now decided to partially CLOSE to public traffic, The Strand Car Park (adjacent To Flynn's Funeral home) between the dates shown to facilitate works for the Athlone Flood Defence Works.

WESTMEATH COUNTY COUNCIL
ROADS ACT, 1993
TEMPORARY CLOSING OF PUBLIC ROADS

Pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, & Article 12 of the Roads Regulations 1994, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council having given the required notice of intention has now decided to temporarily CLOSE to public traffic the following roads for the period and reason specified below.

All junctions to the closed roads will be closed at 205m as required from the junction.

Alternative Routes/Detour:
Detour signage will be in place.

Reason for Proposed Closure:

To facilitate the running of ALMC Motor Club – Hellfire Rally – Motor Stage Rally event under the governance of Motorsport Ireland.

A map indicating the location of the road closure and the diversions to be put in place may be viewed on the local authority’s website;

 

These roads shall be closed on the 17th August 2025 from 9.00am to 7.30pm as outlined below:

Stage 1 Kingsmountain: 9.00am to 6.30pm

Stage 2 Gigginstown: 9.30am to 7.00pm

Stage 3 Mullaghameen: 10.00am to 7.30pm

L-4004-0 Abbey Road, Athlone

Notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council, having given the required notice of intention has now decided to CLOSE to public traffic, the road described hereunder between the dates shown to facilitate works in relation to Athlone Main Drainage Project.

Alternative Routes Available:

  • Northgate Street L-4005-0 to St Mary's Hall Rd (L-8016-0)
