At the January Council meeting on 26 January 2026, the Elected Members of Westmeath County Council made Variation 1 of the Westmeath County Development Plan 2021 – 2027. 

Variation No 1 comprises of two components:

• To incorporate a Settlement Area Plan for Mullingar in the Westmeath County Development Plan 2021-2027
• To integrate the Specific Planning Policy Requirements (SPPRs) from the Sustainable Residential Development and Compact Settlements Guidelines for Planning Authorities (2024) into the Westmeath County Development Plan 2021–2027
