As part of the national Right to Read campaign, Westmeath Libraries is delighted to host the Summer Stars Programme.
The Summer Stars Reading Programme is a national reading initiative which aims to foster a love of recreational reading in children of all ages and to maintain continuous reading across the summer months. Reading for pleasure and free choice of reading material are key factors in establishing good reading habits. This summer, encourage your child to become a confident reader and to explore all kinds of books while keeping boredom at bay. In addition, Summer Stars encouraged family reading; whether through picking books in the library, or reading them at home, the Summer Stars welcomes families with children of all ages through the doors to participate..
How do you become a Summer Star? It’s very simple: Children are asked to register for the programme and pick up a reading card. Everyone who joins the Summer Star Programme will see their name displayed in their library. When the card is full, it can be returned to their library where it will be entered into our weekly Summer Stars draw and where they can pick up a reading reward from the library, and begin the journey to read another 8 books. Everyone who returns a card by the end of August will be invited to a medal ceremony.
In addition, the Summer Stars Programme offers access to a host of resources- check out online reading with our free borrowbox app, or online activities with summerstars website Even better, Westmeath Libraries is delighted to host a range of activities as part of the Summer Stars Programme. we have author visits, storytimes, K'nex challenges and Lego workshops.
