There are obligations on persons who supply tyres whether as manufactures, wholesalers, suppliers, traders, or retailers and on the collectors of waste tyres.  

An exemption from these obligations is available to persons who participate in either of the following collective compliance scheme:

• Join Repak ELT, the sole compliance scheme approved under the 2007 Regulations (Repakelt).
• Self comply with Westmeath County Council (Tel: 044 93 32226).

Failure to comply shall result in legal action.

Waste tyres are required to be collected by authorised collector/s and sent to a licensed facility for reprocessing such as:

Individuals/companies found passing their waste on to unauthorised collectors face prosecution and could be fined up to €3,000 and or 6 months imprisonment sentence on summary conviction. If such waste is disposed of that causes environmental pollution a charge for clean up may also be charged.

How to find out if your collector is authorised:

An individual or business can apply to Offaly Co.Co. for a Waste Collection Permit for the Midland Region.

• Midland region is Longford, Westmeath, Tipperary North, Offaly and Laois.
• The permit must be carried on the vehicle at all times.
• A person can request to view the permit before giving the collector waste and check to that they are authorised for their county. The person should ensure that the waste from their site is listed in the appendix to the permit
