What is a Broadband Connection Point (BCP)?

Broadband Connection Points, or BCPs, are public\community buildings selected to receive high-speed broadband in advance of the rollout of fibre through the National Broadband Plan.

All BCPs are setup with internal and external Wi-Fi access points ,allowing members of the public, living in the general hinterlands, to make use of this broadband as required. More information on BCPs can be found here.

How were the locations for the Broadband Connection Points selected?

The main criteria for selection was:

  • Stage One: The BCP’s were located in the AMBER area of the National Broadband Plan where commercial operators had no plans to deliver high speed broadband .
  • Stage Two: A limited number of BCP’s were approved in BLUE areas of the National Broadband Plan in response to the need to promote and facilitate remote working facilities.

For these reasons you will notice Westmeath BCPs are mostly located in rural areas.
