Winter Gritting Schedule

Inclement weather in winter months will result in ice and snow on roads which increases the risk of loss of control of vehicles and collisions.  During the winter months Westmeath County Council monitors ground and air temperatures along with road surface thermal mapping and condition.  When this forecasting system indicates that frost and snow will occur, the Council deploys their winter gritting crew to treat major roads with rock salt. 

The primary aim of winter gritting is to increase road safety.  However, the onus is always on the driver to adjust their driving speed in accordance with prevailing conditions.  The Council’s winter gritting crew consists of 9 lorry mounted gritters which can be equipped with snow ploughs when required.  With a total of over 2,000 km of roadway in the County it would not be practical to treat every road.Therefore, priority is given to National Primary, National Secondary and Strategic Regional and Urban roads.
