Transportation
The aim of Westmeath County Council is to provide and develop transportation and infrastructural networks for sustainable, environmental, economic and balanced regional development purposes.
Roads are the dominant mode of transport in Ireland and therefore of critical importance to our every day life. The maintenance and development of the road network is required to facilitate the balanced economic, social and cultural development of the County. The road network provides mobility within the county also provides strategic regional and national links to the county. Westmeath County Council is the Road Authority for the public road network in the County and therefore has a duty to maintain these roads.
The road network that Westmeath County Council are responsible for maintaining and improving in Westmeath consists of in excess of 2,000 km of public roads. The classification and lengths of these roads are as follows:
- National Primary 108km
- National Secondary 85km
- Regional 310km
- Local Primary 508km
- Local Secondary 916km
- Local Tertiary 405km

The Roads Act 1993 sets on the primary legal framework for road infrastructure in Ireland. This legislation established the National Road Authority fund and are ultimately responsible for the National road network. Funding for Regional and Local roads are provided from by Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government and from Westmeath County Councils own resources.
Roads and Traffic legislation give the Council a range of powers to manage the road network. These powers include:
- Declaration of Roads to be public
- Taking in Charge of Housing Schemes
- Abandonment of a public road
- Temporary closure of roads
- Traffic Management measures
- Specify road Speed Limits
- Issue of hedge or tree cutting notices
- Issue of Parking fines
