Local Elections 2009

On Monday, 15th June, 2009, the First Annual Meeting of the newly elected Mullingar Town Council was held. 

Four newly elected Members - Cllr. Peter Burke, Cllr. Aidan Davitt, Cllr. Gerry Sheridan and Cllr. Bill Collentine took their seats in the Market House for the first time. 
 
Cllr. Ruth Illingworth (F.G.) was elected Cathaoirleach of Mullingar Town Council for the year June 2009 to June 2010 and Cllr. Detty Cornally (LAB) was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach.

An election of members of the above-mentioned local authority is about to be held. Nomination papers may be obtained from the address below during the usual office hours. A person may nominate himself/herself as a candidate or may, with his/her consent, be nominated by a proposer who is registered as a local government elector in the area of the local authority for which he/she proposes to nominate the candidate. A nomination paper from a candidate of a registered political party must have a certificate of political affiliation attached which must be produced to me with his/her completed nomination paper. If no certificate is attached, the candidate must, before the latest time for receiving nominations, either-

Details of these requirements are set out in the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009. The latest time for receiving nominations is 12 noon on the 16th day of May, 2009. Completed nomination papers may be delivered to me in person by the candidate or his/ her proposer at any time when I am at my office, from 10am on the 9th day of May, 2009 until 12 noon on the last day for receiving nominations. I am required by law to attend to receive nominations between 10am and 12 noon and between 2pm and 5pm on the 15th day of May, 2009 and between 10am and 12 noon on the 16th day of May, 2009. If the election is contested, a poll will be taken on the 5th day of June, 2009 between the hours of 7am and 10pm.

In general these Acts provide for the conduct of Elections including nominations, postal voting, special voting, arrangements for the Poll, the taking of the poll, procedure and facilities for voting, counting of votes, rules for the counting of votes and electoral offences. Other relevant statutory provisions include the: 

Regulations will be made in 2009 specifying the documents that a voter may be required to produce at a polling station and that as an assenter to the nomination of a non-party candidate to the person witnessing a statutory declaration.
Mr. John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (5 February 2009) announced that European and Local Elections will be held on Friday 5 June 2009. Polling hours will be from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm.
