Westmeath County Council is the statutory planning authority for the county of Westmeath excluding the area within the Athlone Town Council area, as provided for in the Planning and Development Act 2000-2002.

The principal instrument for achieving this objective is through the Westmeath County Development Plan. The plan provides a framework of acceptable uses within the county, defining acceptable forms of development, and where it should be directed. It also provides a detailed basis for the control of development.

While the plan will be of interest to many people, the procedure for submitting a planning application and the accompanying information leaflets will be of equal if not greater interest to visitors to this site. Most people make only one planning application to a planning authority in their lifetime so we hope that the information provided is clear and unambiguous to assist you in this process. We receive approximately one hundred valid applications a month and fully completed applications and adherence to the information notes will assist us in providing a better service for you our customers. We will be expanding this site on regular basis and any queries you may have can be directed to our list of contact names attached.
