In recent years there has been a great resurgence of interest in local history. In Westmeath County Library Service, our response has been to develop and invest in resources which will aid the research process for the local historian. These resources take various forms: apart from the more obvious books and newspapers, we now have significant holdings of microfilm, cd-rom and digitised material which were previously only available in national repositories.
Whether your interest is in researching your family history in Westmeath; the history of your parish or townland; or perhaps some specialised study on writers or artists from Westmeath, the history of sports and pastimes or even the folklore of your local area, we try to provide access to a wide range of material.
Given the demographics of the county, resources pertinent to North Westmeath and general material on Westmeath itself are held in our new Library in Mullingar, while those most pertinent to South Westmeath are held in the Aidan Heavey Public Library in Athlone. Small collections of local books are held in all of our branch libraries.
In the following pages you will get a flavour of the holdings of Westmeath County Library Services. If you intend coming a distance to view material, please contact us in advance, by e-mail or with a phone-call, to check on the availability of particular material; this will help us to help you better.
