To enhance and improve the quality of life in the county by providing a high level of Environmental Protection.
The Environment Section has responsibility for Waste Management, Waste Enforcement, Litter Control, Pollution Control, Water Quality, Environmental Promotion, Veterinary Service, Control of Horses and Dogs.
Waste Management involves the operation of two landfill sites, a refuse collection service and the provision of recycling facilities and information.

In addition the county is part of the Midlands Waste Management Startegy with counties Longford, Offaly, Laois and Tipperary North.
The environment section is also responsible for litter control and the implementation of packaging and other Regulations.
Pollution Control involves the maintenance, noise and improvement of water quality in the county's rivers and lakes.

Nearly half a million tonnes of household, commercial / industrial, construction and demolition waste is generated in the Midlands Region every year. The five local authorities, Laois, Longford, North Tipperary, Offaly and Westmeath, have worked together to prepare a new Waste Management Plan for the Midlands Region for the period 2005 - 2010.
