General Election 8 February 2020.

The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government signed the Polling Day Order fixing 8 February 2020 as the day for taking the poll at the General Election.

The closing date for the Supplement to the Register of Electors was Wednesday 22 January 2020.

The closing date for the Supplement to the Postal Voters and Special Voters Lists was Thursday 16 January 2020.

Local Electoral Areas

A Local Electoral Area boundary commission report was published in 2018. This was adopted by Westmeath County Council in March 2019 and resulted in changes to Westmeath’s Local Electoral Area boundaries. Westmeath now has four Local Electoral Areas, listed as follows:

  • Mullingar - 6 Councillors
  • Athlone - 5 Councillors
  • Kinnegad - 5 Councillors
  • Moate - 4 Councillors

Voting

The deadline to register to vote for the 2019 Local Elections was Tuesday, 7 May 2019.

All residents can vote in Local Elections, regardless of nationality. You are eligible to vote in a Local Election once you are 18 years of age, or will reach 18 on or before Polling Day (Friday, 24 May 2019). You can check the register to make sure you are registered to vote. You can also visit our page on voting and elections to find out more information and download any forms you need to register to vote or update your details.
