Strategic Policy Committees

The process to set up Strategic Policy Committees, was started in late 1999, following the local elections. This initiative seeks to enhance the electoral mandate within local government, by strengthening the corporate position of the councillors. The SPC’s also provide the framework for people working with representative bodies in local areas to bring the particular knowledge and expertise of their own sector and integrate it where appropriate, in broad local strategy.

There are four SPC’s in Westmeath:

  • Economic Development and Planning.
  • Environment.
  • Transportation and Infrastructure.
  • Housing, Social and Cultural Development.

There is also a Corporate Policy Group (CPG) comprising the Cathaoirleach of the local authority and the SPC chairs. This group will link the work of the different SPC’s, and provide a forum where policy affecting the whole council can be agreed for submission to the full council.
