Young Artists Putting Road Safety First

“The council isn’t just about fixing roads, there’s a wide range of services within the council who are determined to raise Road Safety Awareness. Through the efforts of the Libraries, our Arts Office, the Environment section, our Sports Partnership and our Road Safety Officer, Westmeath County Council are committed to working together to  keep Road Safety on everyone’s mind.”

With these words, Cllr. Frank McDermott opened the prize giving ceremony for the 2016 Westmeath Road Safety Poster competition on 9th December in the Atrium of Westmeath County Council. Schools from around the county were invited to submit entries on any Road safety theme including: Belt up, Be Safe Be Seen, Cycle Safety, Distracted-Watch out- there’s cars about and Sharing the Road with three  age categories 4-7, 8-10, 11-13.

Paula O’Dornan, A/County Librarian complimented the children saying “It is amazing to see the thought that goes into a road safety poster- from the youngest ages upwards, you can see that  children are taking road safety seriously”. Colm Smith, Westmeath Road Safety Officer paid tribute to the schools and parents: “We had a huge amount of entries and I would like to thank  all those who spent time with the children discussing all sorts of Road Safety issues which led to this fabulous array of work on display tonight”.

The Atrium was packed out and parents, grandparents and siblings watched as the talented young artist received their prizes and their original winning entries from the Cathaoirleach. Congratulations to the following winners:
