Hip Hip Hooray- the sun put his hat on and came out to play for the launch of the Summer Reading Stars programme in Westmeath Libraries. Storyteller Aideen McBride did a whistle-stop tour of the county meeting children in Athlone, Moate, Kilbeggan, Castlepollard and Mullingar and encouraging them to read throughout the summer with the Summer Stars Programme.
Reading throughout the summer is great for those days when the Irish weather lets us down. But even on sunnier days, books have their place, whether it’s to find out more about a place, to spark an idea for an activity or just to relax with a book at bedtime. The Summer Stars Reading Programme encourages families to visit the library, to discover, and sometimes rediscover, reading for pleasure and to establish good reading habits.
Taking a rest from reading over the summer can lead to a deterioration in reading skills, sometimes known as the summer slide. Reading during the summer helps children to maintain or even improve their vocabulary and their reading and literacy skills. This summer, encourage your child to become a confident reader and to explore all kinds of books while keeping boredom at bay.
How do you become a Summer Star? It’s very simple: Children are asked to register for the programme and pick up a reading card. Everyone who joins the Summer Star Programme will see their name displayed in their library. When children have read 8 books, they can pick up a reading reward from the library, and begin the journey to read another 8 books and earn more rewards. When the card is full, it can be returned to their library where it will be entered into our weekly Summer Stars draw. At the end of the summer, everyone who has returned at least 1 completed card to their library will be invited to receive a medal.
The Summer Star programme runs from June until the end of August
