Moate Library recently celebrated its first birthday having been officially opened in the newly refurbished Courthouse on 17th June 2016. This was marked by a series of events including the launch of the Summer Stars Reading Programme and included storytimes and teddybears picnics. Since the library opened, the residents of Moate and the surrounding area have utilised the beautiful facilities to their fullest. In addition, Lorna and Anne, the staff of Moate Library, have been busy with a range of activities and competitions for people of all ages.
Since moving to its new home Moate Library took advantage of the historic setting to host a heritage week exhibition on Moate Castle. The staff have also held a series of initiatives to encourage reading ranging from Book Doctor Clinics for younger readers to Blind Date with a Book, matching adult readers with a surprise book for Valentine’s Day! Young artists have been encouraged to show their creativity whether through drawings of favourite Mr Men characters to painting and decorating of Easter Eggs. Harry Potter fans had the chance to show off their knowledge in the Harry Potter Quiz in February with Luna’s Ladies taking first place, Potter’s Pixies coming second and Mad-Eye’s Minions claiming third place. During Bealtaine, the Library also hosted the Carnation Theatre who performed Noah’s Wife missed the Boat: she left the washing out!.
Moate Library has had nearly 35,000 people visit in the first year in its new home in the refurbished Courthouse. Whether dropping in to read a newspaper, sitting down to use the wifi, typing up an assignment or coming in with the family to pick up some books, Moate Library retains a central role in serving the community. Going forward, Moate Library is committed to promoting the Summer Stars Reading Programme this summer; the Library will be celebrating our past during Heritage Week and in September, computer classes will be available for beginners through Digitize the Nation.
