Community: Westmeath Town and Village Action Plans

Towns and Villages in Westmeath are the focus of the social, community and civic life of their wider community.  The recent economic downturn has impacted negatively on rural towns and villages and we need to support the revitalisation of our towns and villages.

While there are a number of strategies and plans available such as the Westmeath Local Economic and Community Plan 2016-2021, the Westmeath County Development Plan 2014-2020, the Westmeath Local Development Strategy 2014-2020, these plans are at a high level.  In order to indentify projects suitable for advancement under various funding initiatives, more detailed, project orientated, Town and Village Action Plans are required.

These plans would be non statutory and their primary objective would be to enhance the quality of the town environment, strengthen the viability of local businesses and help to create a thriving town.  These plans would reflect the objectives of local interests with input from the Council.  The completed Town Action Plans would provide a menu of potential projects which could be advanced by the local community or the Council under various funding streams available such as LEADER, Town and Village Renewal, Rural recreation infrastructure, etc.

Chief Executive of Westmeath County Council, Mr Pat Gallagher stated,

Now that funding is being made available to enhance the physical infrastructure and improve the economic viability of our towns and villages, the Council want to hear from local interests as to how they want to see their area developing over the next few years.  The Council will work with local interests to identify their needs and priorities, and set out the actions that are necessary to make our towns and villages better places.”

This project is being lead by the Community Development Section of the Council with the primary work on preparation of the Action Plans being undertaken by Consultants.  In this regard Consultants have been appointed to facilitate Action Plans and public meetings have been scheduled as follows:
