Westmeath County Council consists of 23 elected members representing 5 electoral areas

- Coole Electoral Area
- Kilbeggan Electoral Area
- Mullingar East Electoral Area
- Mullingar West Electoral Areas
Local elections were held on 5th June 2009, to fill the 23 seats on Westmeath County Council.
The head of the council and the first citizen of the county is the Cathaoirleach who is elected from amongst the council’s membership. The current Cathaoirleach is Cllr. Johnny Penrose.
The business of the elected council is carried out at council meetings and a number of policy and area committees.
County Council
The County Council is made up of all 23 elected members from each of the five electoral areas in Westmeath.
Area Committees
In Westmeath there are four area committees, Mullingar, Coole, Kilbeggan and Athlone
Strategic Policy Committees
Strategic Policy Committees, are made up of elected members of the County Council and representatives from various sectors of society.
Corporate Policy Group
The Corporate Policy Group coordinates and links the work of the various SPCs and acts as a forum where policy decisions can be agreed for recommendation to the full council.
