The Kilbeggan to Mullingar Greenway is proposed as a 35km recreational facility for use by cyclists, walkers and other designated users. It will also provide a strategic connection between the Royal Canal Greenway & the Old Rail Trail at Mullingar and the Grand Canal Greenway (via the Kilbeggan Branch of the Grand Canal). This project will complete a potential 150km off-road greenway loop between Mullingar, Athlone and Tullamore. It will also provide for key regional links to other Greenways in the Midlands and beyond including the Grand Canal Greenway, the Old Rail Trail Greenway, the Royal Canal Greenway and the Galway to Athlone Greenway.

The NRO has completed the early phases of the project with funding provided by TII. RPS Consulting Engineers Ltd. were appointed in March 2023 to complete the planning and design phases.

The first public consultation on the Study Area and Constraints was held in May 2023 Following an appraisal process, two feasible route corridor options were identified from a longlist of options. These have been developed to connect likely tourism and leisure attractions and use publicly owned land where possible. The second Public Consultation on the Route Corridor Options took place in May 2024. The Options Selection Report has been drafted and is undergoing review. A third Public Consultation will take place and the Emerging Preferred Route Corridor (EPRC) will be displayed. Following consideration of feedback and any other information, a Preferred Route Corridor will be selected. It is anticipated that this phase will be completed by mid-2025.
