The new cycleway and pedestrian bridge in Athlone and associated peripheral works was opened to the public in August 2023.
This 500m section of cycleway links the Marina on the east bank of the Shannon with Athlone Castle on the west bank. It includes a new cycleway bridge across the Shannon with associated ramps and boardwalks. The 104m long cycleway bridge is located between the Radisson Hotel and the Luan Gallery and is located approximately 75m upstream of the existing Custume Bridge.
Jons Civil Engineering Ltd were awarded the contract in August 2021 and the scheme was officially opened on the 8th August 2023.
Separately from the main contract the area of public realm between the Radisson Hotel and the town centre via the AIB bank has been upgraded to improve connectivity to the town centre.
