Visit Westmeath

Westmeath is a county where 7,000 years of history and heritage combine to create a mythical, magical landscape that stuns the senses. Every striking landscape is steeped with ancient stories of great kings, valiant heroes, epic deeds, sorcery and unspeakable loss through the deceit, betrayal and treachery that accompanies the greatest of our legends. The Children of Lir, the Hill of Uisneach - the mythological and sacred centre of Ireland and Fore Abbey are just some of the unique assets of the county. When combined with outstanding visitor attractions such as Athlone Castle, Belvedere House, Kilbeggan Distillery Experience, Tullynally Castle Gardens, Dún na Sí Heritage and Amenity Park and great places to stay, socialise and shop, we offer compelling stories and great visitor experiences.

The county can be explored through our extensive network of high quality off-road cycling and walking trails; the Old Rail Trail Greenway from Mullingar to Athlone, the Royal Canal Greenway, which will soon take you from Dublin to Longford via Mullingar, beautiful looped walking trails at Mullaghmeen Forest and Porlick on the Lough Ree shore and the Westmeath Way long distance hiking trail.

We enjoy a strong musical culture across all genres with famous local talent including Joe Dolan and John McCormack and arts centres, theatres and art galleries including the Luan Gallery and a range of festivals and events offer the chance to sample our creative culture. Westmeath is part of Ireland’s Ancient East, which offers visitors a chance to experience 5,000 years of history, in lush green landscapes, with stories told by the best storytellers in the world.
