Litter Management Plan

Litter Management Plans for Athlone and Mullingar Municipal Districts were adopted on the 12th June 2017 to cover the period 2017-2019

The Litter Management Plans set out the objectives for the prevention and eradication of litter throughout the Municipal Districts of Athlone and Mullingar.

The Litter Management Plan recognises that the problem of litter will not be eradicated unless a multi-dimensional approach is taken. Every sector must be involved in tackling the litter problem, the public as well as the businesses and the local authority. While there is a growing awareness of the importance to keep westmeath litter free, there is still a need to change attitudes and recognise that litter is anti-social. At one level such a change can be achieved by the heightening of awareness of littering, its causes and its consequences. At another level stringent enforcement through on-the-spot fines and prosecutions may be required.

The plan sets out realisable and measurable objectives for the following:

1. Education and Awareness
2. Provision of Waste Facilities
3. Litter Management: Monitor occurrences and to deal with the consequences of littering
4. Litter Prevention and Enforcement
