Embracing Art: St Peters Art Programme 2003 2011
On Tuesday 11th September, friends and family of St Peter’s gathered in Castlepollard Library for the launch of the book “Embracing art: St Peter’s Art Programme 2003 – 2011.”
St Peter’s is a residential centre for people with intellectual disabilities in Castlepollard. With the support of the management of St Peter’s, the Parents and Friends Association and Westmeath County Council, an art programme was developed which ran from 2003 to 2011. The programme was led from the outset by artist Teresa Doyle. In 2008 Teresa was joined by artist Ursula Meehan.
To record, document and celebrate the art works, Ursula Meehan created the book ‘Embracing Art: St Peter’s Art Programme 2003-2011’, which contains images of the artworks created by participants and tells the story of the development of the programme and the projects undertaken by the artists.
Catherine Kelly, Arts Officer opened the launch with an address which focuses on the importance of this project and showcased some of the images in the book.
The launch was also supported by Cllrs Paddy Hill and Cllr Frank McDermott. Ursula Meehan and John Smith (Chairman of St Peters’s Parents and Friends association) also took opportunity to say how much impact had.
